Barrie Food Bank's executive director looks ahead to retirement

Sharon Palmer is retiring after three years at the helm of the Barrie Food Bank.

"It's exciting, but it is also bittersweet as it has been a tremendous privilege to be here," said Palmer, the organization's executive director.

The 61-year-old has led the team at the Barrie Food Bank since March 2021, entering into the role at a time when demand was skyrocketing as thousands in the community struggled financially following the pandemic.

"It was scary at times because we had never seen those increases year over a year over 100 per cent, so you're thinking about how we can raise the funds to keep that going? How can we encourage the community to meet that need," she said.

Palmer has dedicated her focus to multiple programs, such as the school lunch program and the food rescue program, which works with local grocery stores, fostering a solid relationship with the grocery corporations.

She also created the food bank's food market, a program that allows clients to choose their own fresh produce, providing an experience similar to a grocery store.

"It provides a lot of dignity to the shopping experience, and that's always been a big concern of mine. I know from research, and I know from talking to people, it's very difficult for people to make that decision to come to the food bank, so the more that we can make it more acceptable for them," said Palmer.

Her impact is something volunteers at the food bank say has been inspiring to watch and learn from.

"Well, obviously, when you have double the people coming through and trying to get the supplies and donations, it's required to have everything here for them, so she's done a great job of getting donations and supplies for the food bank,' said Gord Widdes, a food bank volunteer.

Palmer will pass the baton on to volunteer Karen Shuh, who will take on the role of executive director starting Tuesday.

While Palmer begins her next chapter - retirement - her impact of making a difference in the lives of others will remain on as her lasting legacy at the Barrie Food Bank.
