‘After Dark’ event raises thousands for gender-based violence victims
The Green Haven Shelter for Women in Orillia held a first-ever ‘Green Haven After Dark’ event at Orillia Square Mall Saturday night, surpassing its goal and raising nearly $23,000 to support victims of gender-based violence.
Around 130 were in attendance and enjoyed 90’s-themed arcades like Dance Dance Revolution, Pacman and Cash Grab, as well as a DJ blasting 90’s music. There was also a range of silent auction prizes, including Toronto Raptors tickets, Shoresy tickets and resort experiences among others.

The funds raised will support Green Haven and its Child and Youth Program’s accommodations for families in crisis around Orillia. The shelter provides six single rooms and four double rooms along with basic needs, ongoing safety planning and 24/7 support.
“If we fail to educate the next generation about the dangers and consequences of abuse and violence, we won’t see meaningful change in our lifetime,” explained Linda Reid, Green Haven’s executive director, in an email to CTV News.
“This [Child and Youth] program empowers young survivors through education, emotional healing, and growth, helping them break the cycle of violence,” added Emily Dilecce, a spokesperson from Green Haven. “We believe that educating young people about the consequences of violence is a critical step toward preventing future abuse. Through workshops, individual counseling, and group activities, our program helps children process their experiences, understand their emotions, and develop healthy relationships.”
Organizers considered the first-ever ‘Green Haven After Dark’ event a success and hope to make it an annual event.
