65-year-old charged with arson after house fire

A basement fire sounded the smoke alarm in a house on Berford Street in Georgian Bluffs.

South Bruce Peninsula firefighters arrived at the home shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday to find smoke billowing from the basement.

South Bruce and the Intertownship fire crews helped extinguish the blaze.

During the investigation, it was discovered that at 6 a.m. that morning, a man was seen on Bruce Street in South Bruce Peninsula near a car carrying incendiary material.

As a result, a 65-year-old South Bruce Peninsula man was charged with:

  • Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm
  • Break, enter a place - commit indictable offence
  • Two counts of arson - disregard for human life
  • Two counts of possession incendiary material
  • Two counts of mischief under $5,000
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Assault with a weapon

The accused was held pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.
