York Regional Police has received more than 400 reports of tax-related scams in the past month.

Investigators say these scams involve the fraudster posing as an agent for the Canadian Revenue Agency by phone or email.

The caller makes claims that the victim is overdue on a tax payment and will face a stiff fine if they don’t make a payment. The fraudster tells the victim they must make a wire transfer or purchase gift cards to make a payment.

Police say other versions of this scam involve a call about immigration papers and threats of deportation.

The public is reminded to verify any calls similar to this before transferring any money and to not be talked into providing personal information.

Anyone who has received a call similar to this or has been a victim of fraud is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
