A young person is facing charges after a fatal crash early Tuesday morning in Caledon.

The single-vehicle crash happened on Highway 10, near Highpoint Sideroad at around 4:15 a.m.

Investigators say the Toyota Sienna minivan was travelling at a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control, veered into the southbound lanes and clipped a hydro pole. The vehicle then continued through a fence and rolled onto a brick gatepost.

A girl, confirmed to be under the age of 16, was pronounced dead at the scene. A boy, who is also under the age of 16, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Any age is difficult. Any fatality is difficult. Of course, a young person is much more tragic," says OPP Const. Stephanie Hammond.

The OPP have since charged the boy with criminal negligence causing death, failure to comply with an undertaking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

There is still much that is unknown about the crash, but it has been confirmed that the teenagers involved were not part of a popular day camp.

Officials with the OPP say officers who attended the scene are also being offered support through counselling.

Highway 10 has reopened after being closed for several hours.
