High school students in York Region are using three new words to stand up to cyberbullying – yes we will.

Purple t-shirts united around 300 students Monday as the school board kicked off a campaign against the problem.

A hashtag was created for the campaign, #yeswewill, to encourage students to use the internet in a positive way and to discourage bullying if they see it.

“We need to make sure we think before we post and we read what we send before we send it so we don't hurt anyone,” said student Cedar Davidson.

The campaign involves both the public and catholic schools as well as York Regional Police.

“You don't know what everyone is facing in their lives and one mean comment can really hurt them,” said student Kaylea Walsh. “If people take responsibility for their actions or their words then it could be a more secure environment online and many people won't feel bullied.”
