Although we haven’t seen the shadow of a groundhog yet, Environment Canada Meteorologist Dave Phillips is predicting six more weeks of winter.

Phillips says this winter is still better than last year’s.

"We've had 8 days where the temperature has been below -20. This time last year, we had 15 of those. We've had about 155 cm of snow, this time last year we had 200 cm of snow.”

Phillips adds that that the groundhogs may not see their shadows but there is a reason for that.

“I'm going to say that Groundhog Willy probably won't see his shadow because of all the snow flurries and the overcast weather, but I sense I wouldn't believe the groundhogs who say winter is over and spring is around the corner. We look at our maps and we say, ‘February is looking like January’. Just because we change the month, we don't change the weather."

But Phillips says spring will come sooner than it did last year and we will be able to enjoy it.

"The ice isn't as thick, there's not as much snow, the ground is not as frozen as deep, so when those warm spring airs come it will be not be as difficult to remove winter and so we could maybe enjoy the spring."
