Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky spent the afternoon in Barrie signing copies of his new book ’99: Stories of the Game’.

Earlier in the day hundreds of people lined up at Chapters to buy his book and get wristbands to the book-signing.

“We arrived here at 8:30 and there was a line-up all the way to the McDonalds and we stood in the storm to get these books,” said one woman in the crowd.

To help control the rush of people,  400 wrist bands were handed out on a first-come, first-served basis with the purchase of a book. Customers were limited to maximum of five books.

“I phoned. They said yes, but there were only 30 wrist bands left! I said ‘oh my gosh I have to get over there’," said another fan.

Fans say they were happy to line-up because it meant meeting The Great One.

"He represents Canada…. I mean he's The Great One, how else can you describe him?" said one man purchasing a book.

Gretzty pays homage to his own hockey heroes in the book, in particular Gordie Howe, who Gretzky looked up to.

The book was written to coincide with the 99th anniversary of the NHL.
