Thornton has issued an immediate watering ban as water levels get critically low.

The Essa Township hamlet issued the ban on Wednesday and is asking resident to turn off all underground watering system.

Residents are also asked to report any neighbour to the municipality, who is spotted watering during the ban.

“Because of the low water levels there's a concern for the public safety if the fire department has to go out, they want to be sure that there's enough water that the residents are protected,” says Carol Mohr of Essa Township.

Watering restrictions have also been issued for residents in Springwater Township.

The township issued the restrictions on Tuesday afternoon, as temperatures continue to soar over 30 C for most of our region.

These restrictions are:

  • Even numbered properties are permitted to water on even number days only between the hours of 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
  • Odd numbered properties are permitted to water on odd numbered days only between the hours of 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
  • Exemptions from the even or odd day restrictions may be granted to owners of newly seeded or sodded lawns upon proof of installation and subject to the approval of the township’s public works department.

“The Township will be enforcing the bylaw and is asking all residents to work together to conserve water, to ensure that we have sufficient supply for the entire community,” said Mark Archer, director of public works.

The township says they reserve the right to declare a full water ban if this extreme heat continues.

Fire danger ratings

Many municipalities are keeping a close eye on dry conditions and the increase risk of fires.

Collingwood made the biggest jump on the fire danger rating scale going from low to extremely high. However, the town has not yet issued a fire ban.

Bracebridge, Clearview, Essa, Muskoka Region, Parry Sound, Severn and Springwater all have their fire danger ratings set at moderate.

If the municipalities believe the risk of fires is too high they will issue a wide spread fire ban until conditions improve.
