Wasaga Beach town council was hoping a generous offer of free land and cash would help them land a new hospital.

During a meeting on Tuesday morning, town council received a report from a committee investigating potential sites for a new hospital.

The committee recommended the healthcare facility be built in Collingwood and not Wasaga Beach. It wasn’t the result Mayor Brian Smith was hoping for.

“There’s not much more that we can do. This council put its best foot forward on two occasions, a decision will be made by that board and it will be what it will be.”

Regardless Smith says he'll support the plan, but still wants to improve healthcare in his town.

The committee wants to build on a 30 acre property in Collingwood because it's located between the beach and the ski hills. It also has access to Highway 26 and close proximity to the local campus of Georgian College.

They were looking at three potential locations.

“The intent was to reach out to the communities we serve in particular municipal councils to gain alignment or support for that preferred location being the poplar side road site,” says David Finbow, Collingwood General and Marine Hospital trustee.

Officials say it's critical that the province sees everybody working together before signing off on it.

“If they are going to invest three to $400 million in a new facility they want to make sure there is alignment and support from all communities,” says Guy Chartrand, CGMH president and CEO.

The hospital's board of trustees will vote on the recommendation Sept. 29.
