The victim in Tuesday’s tragic crash in Caledon has been identified as a 12-year-old girl.

Flowers could be seen on Wednesday lining the area along Highway 10 where the young girl died.  Speaking with CTV Toronto, the parents of the girl say they are devastated by her death.

Her parents declined to disclose her name and her identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Investigators say the Toyota Sienna minivan the girl was a passenger in was travelling at a high rate of speed, when the driver lost control, veered into the southbound lanes and clipped a hydro pole. The vehicle then continued through a fence and rolled onto a brick gatepost.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minivan, a boy who the OPP confirm is under the age of 16, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He has since been charged with criminal negligence causing death, failure to comply with an undertaking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

CTV Toronto has learned the boy and girl were friends.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
