Students in Barrie and Orillia are making Valentine’s Day cards for our veterans this year.

Mrs. Karin Penny Nie’s grade three class at Marchmont Public School in Orillia have personalized each card with a message from the heart.

“I wrote ‘Dear veteran, thank you so much for being so kind, brave, thoughtful and caring,” said grade three student Jorja Hedges. “‘I'm wishing you the best Valentine's Day ever’.”

“Our class represented our school at the Remembrance Day assembly in November so they understood the connection between veterans and remembering,” said teacher Mrs. Karin Penny Nie. “They were thrilled that they were going to be a part of honouring our veterans in this way.”

The cards will be dropped off at the Barrie Public Library once they’re finished, and will then be distributed to veterans who live in senior homes.

“I'm hoping it's something that they'll treasure,” said Debra Smith with the Barrie Public Library of the veterans. “Hopefully they'll feel that we appreciate them and all that they've done for us.”

“The students explain to us what they're thankful for and recognize the sacrifice people have made for them,” said St. John Vianney Catholic Elementary School Principal John Young.

Valentines can be made and dropped off at the Barrie Public Library right up until Friday, when they’ll be sent to Veteran’s Affairs and delivered to veterans across the country in time for Valentine’s Day.

Staff are hoping to see 100 cards by Friday.
