Two people have died in a plane crash in Algonquin Park

A Cessna 150 went missing around 8pm last night after the pilot "declared an airborne emergency". Shortly after regional air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft in the Haliburton area east of Bracebridge.

The pilot had been following directions from air traffic control, as he attempted to find a field to land the plane. The pilot said he had become disoriented in the clouds and was concerned he was running out of fuel.

A Hercules aircraft and a Griffin helicopter from the Trenton base were dispatched to conduct a search of the area.

Captain Alexandre Cadieux of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton confirms the wreckage was found early this morning in the Algonquin Provincial Park area.

The plane had left the Buttonville Airport northeast of Toronto and the pilot had intended to return there.
