Three young boys had to be rescued by emergency crews on Saturday morning after strong winds caused their two small rubber dinghies to be pushed out into the middle of Kempenfelt Bay.

Barrie firefighters, along with a good Samaritan grabbed the boys before they were pushed even further out onto the water towards some of the ice that still remains on Lake Simcoe.

“Anybody who falls into the water at this time of year won’t last long,” says Rob Taylor, platoon chief for Barrie Fire and Emergency Services. “The damage you’re going to do to your body, even if you do get rescued in time with the cold water is going to be severe.”

The boys didn't have any life jackets with them, but were uninjured.

“Just a bad idea to go out on the ice or the water for that matter; they just didn’t know better.”
