Thousands of people in Muskoka are without power as high winds and heavy rain hit the region.
According to Hydro One, thousands of customers are currently without any power to their homes and businesses. At one point on Monday, 20,000 people were without power.
A Hydro One spokesperson says damaging weather conditions are to blame.
“It was bad last night, you couldn't even see,” says Muskoka resident Rick Dafoe. “It was just hammering down, bouncing off the pavement with the rain and the wind. Oh it was bad.”
The outage stretches as far north as Huntsville and south into Torrance. Several other smaller outages are reported throughout the region.
“Sometimes the line breaks, so we have a quick sleeve here, where you slide the wire in through here and again on the other side and the line is repaired and you pull it back up into the air and you can re-energize the line,” says Hydro One spokesperson Steve McIntyre.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Sunday warning about heavy rainfall. The weather authority estimated 15 millimetres to 30 millimetres of rain could fall by the end of Monday.
Hydro One says power should be completely restored to the Muskoka area by Tuesday morning.
