From hats to coats and clothes, donations are piling up at the Errinrung Retirement and Long Term Care facility for Syrian refugees who will soon be arriving in the region.

“Overwhelmed, there is a lot here,” said Stephanie Black who is among a small army of volunteers sorting donations.

The facility in Thornbury started collecting donations in December and is working with all kinds of community groups, from the local Liberal Association to the Red Cross.

“They’re coming here with not much in the coldest time of year,” said Haily Dunn with the Errinrung Retirement and Long Term Care facility.

The Bases at Borden and Meaford have been planning for the possibility of hosting refugees, but Immigration Canada officials told CTV News the local bases are not part of the plan yet. However, the donations collected in Thornbury will go wherever they’re needed.

Along with clothing and toiletries, groups across the region say they’re in need of boxes and bins to help store the donations. Click here to find out how you can donate.
