Texting your emergency to 911 isn’t available in Barrie yet, but it’s coming for a select group of people.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) announced it would be bringing its text-to-911 service for the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, or speech impaired community in Canada.

Before this comes to Barrie, however, the city’s 911 call centre needs to do some upgrades to equipment and technology.

The city says the service will only be available to people with hearing and speech impairments who register their phones through their wireless carrier. An announcement is expected to come when the service is available.

For now, voice calling is the only way to reach 911.
