New steps are being taken in Penetanguishene for a possible strike by hundreds of unionized jail workers at the Central North Correctional Centre.

Chris Jackel, local president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, tells CTV News that large shipments of supplies arrived on the CNCC site on Wednesday. The supplies are believed to be part of preparations for managers to step in and replace striking workers.

Jackel says wages are a major issue in the dispute and he's hopeful the government will make a last minute move to avoid a strike, but says they're not optimistic. The union voted down the government's latest offer in November.

CTV News has reached out to Ontario’s Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections for a comment, but so far our calls have gone unreturned.

If a deal isn’t reached, three hundred workers at the jail could be on strike on Jan. 10.
