One person is in custody  after a stabbing early Tuesday morning led to a hostage situation in downtown Barrie.

Two men were involved in a fight during a party at a home on Dunlop Street East. It was just after 5 a.m. when Barrie police say one of the men was stabbed in the abdomen.

According to investigators, the suspect fled the scene and ran back to his apartment just a few houses down. Police say he then barricaded himself inside the unit with his three roommates.

Officers shut down the neighbourhood and evacuated two surrounding apartments. Police were able to negotiate with the 42-year-old Barrie man and after an hour he surrendered.

The stabbing victim, a 26-year-old Barrie man, was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre for treatment.

“The three people that were held inside were released without any injuries,” says Const. Sarah Bamford.

The accused has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and three counts of probation violations.

He appeared in a bail court on Tuesday and will be back before a judge on Wednesday.
