Southlake Regional Health Centre has unveiled a new radiation unit that will help the hospital treat more cancer patients.

Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins and hospital officials unveiled the new unit on Tuesday. The province invested $3.6 million to bring the radiation treatment unit to Newmarket.

“This has enabled us to treat more than 400 more cancer patients closer to home, each year,” said Dr. Dave Williams, president and CEO of Southlake in a statement. “We are thrilled that the provincial government is supporting our efforts to put patients first."

The radiation unit uses linear accelerator technology to prevent cancer cells from growing and repairing themselves. The unit also allows doctors to focus in on a specific body part.

“The addition of this suite will allow for more treatment options closer to home for York Region and Simcoe County residents,” Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard in a statement.

This is the fourth such machine at the hospital and was installed in February.
