The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is investigating dozens of cases of Salmonella that have been linked to a Bradford wings and ribs joint.

Dr. Colin Lee with the SMDHU says that St. Louis Bar and Grill had to be closed on May 31, and again on June 15 and 16. The closure was for inspection, sanitization and disinfection.

“On both occasions, the health unit was satisfied that there was no risk to public safety and cleared us to re-open within a few hours (May 31) and the next day (June 15),” a spokesperson for the restaurant said in a statement.

The health unit says there have been 22 confirmed cases and 18 more people have shown symptoms. According to Lee, their investigation has determined the issue is isolated to the Bradford location, and not a product or supply chain.

"When we look at it there isn't one item that sticks out,” Lee says. “So it would suggest that it may be food handling practices, contamination, or someone's been ill in the kitchen."

The spokesperson says the restaurant chain is cooperating with the SMDHU, and adds that the safety and well-being of its customers and staff are a priority.

The health unit is ordering any staff member who became ill, to get medical clearance before they return to work.
