Spring means construction season is getting into full swing on city roads and on our highways and police are reminding people to slow down in construction zones.

So far 15 people have died in speed related crashes in Ontario in 2015 and police fear there will be more now that the warmer weather is here and people will be looking to getaway on weekends.

“Just being that much more aware of your surroundings and when you do approach construction zones, make sure you are driving slowly, appropriately for the location,” says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

People who work in construction zones are also pleading with drivers to pay extra attention when passing through.

“Very common, very common - I’ve had a lot of close calls myself, I’ve actually been hit with a rear view mirror once,” says City of Barrie employee Dave Magnusson.

Even police say they are still noticing drivers passing them too fast and too close when they are pulled over on the highway.

“When you’re travelling and you see a stopped emergency vehicle, a police car, a fire truck, an ambulance you are required by law to slow down and move to an adjacent lane if there is one available for you and again we want you to extend that courtesy to any stopped vehicle,” adds Sgt. Schmidt.
