An automotive class at a Barrie high school is giving students a history lesson while having fun.

A shop class at Barrie Central is restoring a 1930 Model ‘A’ Ford.

“I was so excited, it wasn’t just something simple – we got to get our hands on the fabrication, take a motor out of another vehicle and put it in. It was awesome!” says one student.

The transportation technology students started working the classic car last year and their teacher says some of them weren’t impressed.

“Half of them thought it was a stupid old piece of junk but a lot of them came around when they start to see what I can turn into,” said teacher Craig Shaw.

Much of the car’s frame was made of wood nailed together. The students are replacing the wood with steel for safety and they are making custom parts.

Restoring the car is not cheap and Shaw is paying for everything out of his own pocket.

“Do I have to say it out loud? I’ll probably put more than $20,000 into it,” adds Shaw.
