Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre has received the largest donation made by a living individual in the hospital’s history, thanks to the co-founder of Tim Hortons.

Ron Joyce and The Joyce Foundation announced a donation of $2.6 million on Tuesday – money that was used to fund a state-of-the-art operating suite.

“RVH has provided excellent health care to myself and other members of my family over the years. It is an honour to give back in a way that will help improve patient care in the region for many years to come,” said Joyce in a news release.

The operating suite offers real time in-room imaging capabilities. It also allows for minimally invasive surgery, such as procedures involving the lungs and abdominal artery.

“This remarkable gift has provided RVH with the most advanced surgical suite of its kind and we are so excited to have it available to our patients,” said Dr. Sandy McDonald, chief of RVH’s surgery program.

With the addition of the new suite, RVH will be able to provide procedures that are not currently offered in north Simcoe Muskoka, including angiograms and angioplasty.

Mike Walker was at today’s announcement and will have the latest tonight at six.
