One of two snakes found abandoned outside a store in Newmarket has died.

The two Burmese pythons were found in plastic bins outside a reptile shop on Leslie Street on Monday morning. York Regional Police say the snakes were found in good health and were transported to a sanctuary near Peterborough.

Later in the afternoon, one of the snakes was pronounced dead.

Investigators say they are not treating the situation as a criminal matter and no charges are expected.
