Despite suffering through one of the worst snowstorms last winter, the province will not be reimbursing the town of Shelburne with disaster relief money.

Dufferin County declared a state of emergency when the winter storm rolled through the region in late January. The state of emergency lasted for three days.

White out conditions left more than 200 travellers stranded in Shelburne and the town opened an emergency shelter and also provided food for stranded travellers.

The town of Shelburne was hoping the province would reimburse the costs for shelter operations and employee overtime, which totalled more than $50,000.

“It’s not significant, but we certainly would have appreciated the support,” said disappointed Shelburne mayor Ed Crewson.

According to the province, disaster relief money is to assist those who have suffered property damage in a natural disaster.

Despite the town not receiving the disaster relief money, Crewson says the community will always set up to help in an emergency. “That doesn’t mean we are going to change our behaviour - we will do the same as we have always done,” said Crewson.

The northern regions of Dufferin County were the hardest hit, but it’s unclear if the province will pay for some of the county’s bills.
