Drivers in Barrie can brace for a rough ride and some headaches as a major overhaul on one of the city's busiest arteries is about to ramp up.

Starting March 27, Mapleview Drive East will be closed from Huronia Road to Country Lane for the installation of a deep sanitary sewer.

This section of Mapleview Drive was closed in December 2016 for the same project, but due to the unexpected amount of groundwater, the work was not able to be completed at that time.

Crews will work 12 hours per day and some weekends until the work is finished. The full closure could last for up to five weeks.

There will be a detour along Yonge Street, Big Bay Point Road and Huronia Road.

The construction will also affect Barrie Transit. The route 8 bus will not service Mapleview Drive East between Yonge Street and Huronia Road, and will detour onto Lockhart Road then back on route.

A free shuttle will be in service to transport transit riders within the out of service area to the Barrie South GO Station during peak service periods Monday to Saturday. The shuttle will operate along Mapleview Drive East between Yonge Street and Huronia Road.
