Several beaches in our region are posted as we head into what is expected be a nice weekend for swimming.

Moose Beach in Tudhope Park in Orillia is among several popular beaches posted by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

Heat, rain and wind are all contributing factors to increased bacteria levels.

The beaches are not closed; the advisory is to inform swimmers of the risks and to make their own informed decision.

“The bacteria levels can cause eye, ear, throat and nose irritation. The risk of ingesting the water can cause fairly serious intestinal discomfort, diarrhea, vomiting. It’s really important that if you are using the water that you are not ingesting the water,” says Brenda Armstrong with the health unit.

Other posted beaches in Simcoe-Muskoka include: Port Sydney Beach in Huntsville, Leonards Beach in Innisfil, Pete Peterson in Midland and Earl Rowe Beach.

Health officials say if an adult chooses to simply wade into the water, showering afterwards may help reduce health risks, but the chances of a child getting sick are much higher.

“Children are particularly at risk in terms of beach exposures because they tend to play in the shallower waters where bacteria levels are often highest and they are more likely to be putting their hands in their mouth,” adds Armstrong.
