Provincial police will be keeping a close eye on area roads and waterways this Canada Day long weekend.

There were eight deaths on OPP-patrolled roads last weekend and provincial police don’t want to see that happen again. They’re asking all drivers to be extra cautious and want them not fall into poor driving behaviour.

“Whether you are speeding, tail-gating, weaving in and out of traffic or accelerating when approaching a yellow traffic light, aggressive driving is a deliberate behaviour that costs people their lives every year,” says OPP deputy commissioner Brad Blair.

So far this year there have been 128 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.

“We are counting on all motorists to drive defensively and avoid all manners of risk so that all road users can travel safely.”

The OPP and Rama police plan to conduct “focused patrols” on Lake Couchiching. Officers will be focusing most of their efforts on the area around Chief Island, citing an increase in boater activity in the last few years.

The OPP says the increased attraction to the spot has been mirrored by an increase in alcohol consumption.

Boaters are reminded they should always be wearing a life-jacket and should carry safety equipment onboard.  Police also recommend keeping a chart compass with you and to keep an eye on the weather forecast.

Citizens are also encouraged to contact police if they suspect someone is impaired and behind the wheel of a vehicle or vessel.
