If you're walking along some of Barrie's main streets, chances are you're being watched.

The City of Barrie now has 10 closed-circuit cameras focused on the downtown core.

The cameras were officially installed in June and are now monitored from a centre at Barrie police headquarters. Police say as well as being able to see what happens from these 10 monitors, their presence will add a feeling of security to people downtown.

“If anything is caught of an evidentiary nature it could be used in court to assist as part of an investigation,” says Deputy Chief Bruce Carlson.

The money for the cameras came from the city, as well as the downtown BIA. Right now there are no new cameras planned, but if the program is expanded, the infrastructure is already in place to handle it.
