Are you and your family prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency? That's the question first responders across the region are asking as part of Emergency Preparedness Week.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is a time to review your emergency plan with your family, build an emergency kit and keep yourself informed by learning about hazards in your area,” said Jeff Weber, Barrie's Deputy Fire Chief. “Public safety begins at home. Everyone should be equipped to take care of themselves and their families for up to three days in the event of an emergency or disaster.”

The province-wide theme of this year’s Emergency Preparedness Week focuses on the importance of personal preparedness in the case of an emergency.

Experts recommend you do the following:

  • Make a plan- Plan and discuss with your family procedures for escaping your house, your neighbourhood and your town in the case of an emergency.
  • Build a kit- Prepare in advance the essentials you will need to survive for at least 72 hours.
  • Be informed- Learn the risks in your community and be aware of the alerting systems.  You can subscribe to the Red Alerts system managed by The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management.

Emergency Preparedness Week runs from May 1 to 7.
