A Simcoe County paramedic saved a woman who tried jumping off of a Highway 400 overpass.

Paramedic Ben Valentine was driving his ambulance early Tuesday morning when he noticed someone stumbling near the Dunlop Street overpass.

“They were stumbling, heading up towards the bridge. There wasn't really a sidewalk. There was a potential they could get hurt,” he says.

He asked the woman from a distance if they needed help, but says the person became erratic, inching closer to the overpass and then jumping over toward the highway.

Valentine was able to grab her just in time and brought her back over the rail.

“It humbles you. It brings to home a different aspect of our job, saving a life before it gets to that point. That's one of the things I’ve been thinking about the last couple of days; is making that difference before the accident.”

Two other paramedics came to the scene and spoke with the woman, who remains in hospital receiving care.
