A 25-year-old Gravenhurst man is facing several drug charges after OPP uncovered more than $500,000 worth of Methylone after they stopped a vehicle in Orillia.

Police say they found the drug, cash and marijuana in a vehicle on Gill Street on Tuesday.

Methylone is a synthetic drug police believe was made in Asia and shipped to Canada. Officials won’t say where the drug was headed but they say the new street drug was found in a power form and was about to be made into pills before being sold. However it can be smoked, snorted and injected.

Police say Methylone is a synthetic derivative of methamphetamine and is popular among young people much the way ecstasy is.

Not a lot is known about the drug. In fact police say the unknown is what most is concerning.

“You don’t know who’s manufacturing it; you don’t know what they’re putting into it. As part to parcel to that and you really don’t know what the drug dealers are doing with it once they decide to cut it,” says OPP Sgt. Sharron Brown.

The man is facing several charges including possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The man was released on bail with a future court date of April 29th, 2014 in Orillia.
