An early afternoon fire has destroyed a home in Oro-Medonte.

Fire crews were called to the home just off of Horseshoe Valley Road on Monday, at around 2 p.m.

The building was engulfed in flames when crews arrived and officials say there was nothing they could do to save it.

Instead, Oro-Medonte assistant deputy chief Scott Andrew says they focused on stopping the flames from spreading.

"In the woods you are always worried about exposures, with all the grass fires there we don't need to get out of control,” he says. “When a home is fully involved like this we are concentrating on the exposures around and it doesn't catch into the woods or over to the neighbours houses."

Andrew says firefighters also had to keep settling tanks cool so they wouldn’t explode.

The homeowner was able to escape without injury.

The cause is still under investigation.
