As temperatures continue to drop, not being able to dress properly can be a real concern, that’s why members of an Orillia church have stepped up.

Hats, mittens and scarves were sealed in plastic bags and were placed on a cross outside St. David's Church on Sunday. These items will help people stay warm this winter.

"They are welcome to take something to warm their bodies and their hearts and that they will know that there are people out there who may not know their names, but we know their situation and we just want to help," Rev. Lori Pilatzke.

The congregation calls it a “warming cross”. Shirley Holcomb came up with the idea.

St. David's offers a community garden in the summer and Holcomb wanted this spirit of sharing to continue 12 months a year.

"There were people who desperately needed it, so we felt we were giving the gift of God’s love to the people and we hope that when they come to take these from the cross that they will feel that same warmth and love."

Members of the church began knitting last spring. Word got out and donations poured in from across the province, nearly 700 sets have been collected so far.

"We have several outreach programs and this is just one of many and it's just the way we think, it makes you feel so good inside to know you're helping people and we see people in need so why not do what you can," says church member Cindy Hindley.

The cross will remain stocked with items all winter and the project will continue as long as there is a need.
