The organizers behind Kempenfest are already projecting a deficit for this year’s event.

Organizers are expecting a $27,000 deficit and they’re blaming the reconstruction of the Barrie waterfront.

Typically the festival welcomes 160 arts and crafts exhibitors, food vendors and the Midway, but as a result of the construction, organizers have had to scale back.

The realignment of Lakeshore Drive also means there will be fewer parking spots available. Organizers fear the construation and lack of parking could turn away the crowds.

Festival manager Tim Aikins is set to make a presentation to Barrie city council on Monday night, but says he won’t be asking for financial support. However, the event could still use some help from the city.

Kempenfest is run by eight not-for profit organizations and traditionally breaks even every year. If there is a deficit, those organizations will have to make up the difference, which means less money going towards community programs.

On average, $250,000 goes back into the community every year.
