With hundreds of thousands of vehicles hitting Ontario highways this long weekend, provincial police say they will be on the lookout for drivers who don’t pay attention.

“If you’re travelling from region to region you will see RIDE spot checks, you will see seatbelt enforcement, you will see speeding and aggressive driving, distracted driving enforcement,” says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

So far in 2015, 227 people have died on OPP patrolled roads, that’s up one from the same time last year.

Police say impaired driving, speeding and distracted driving charges are down so far this year but seatbelt charges are up.

During ‘Operation Impact’, OPP will focus on the “Big Four’ – the four major contributing factors to serious crashes or fatalities. The ‘Big Four’ include: impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving and not wearing seatbelts.

And with a lot of people expected to close the cottage for the season, there is expected to be lots trailers on the road. Police say drivers need to make sure things are tied down properly and make sure their lights on their trailers work.

“We don’t want stuff flying off the highway because that causes a huge problem for secondary collisions,” adds Sgt. Schmidt.

York Regional Police release 'recipe for disaster'

York Regional Police have released a page from their "cook book," highlighting the organization's "recipe for disaster" as part of  Operation Impact.

"Don't be a turkey," York Regional Police said in the circulated document, made to look like a page of an aged cook book.

"Those hoping to spend some not-so-quality time with YRP this Thanksgiving weekend should try our Recipe for Disaster, a surefire way to endanger yourself, fellow motorists and family members alike."

The recipe includes four "steps," which are the four bad driving habits being targeted by police including impaired driving, speeding and distracted driving and seatbelt misuse.
