Provincial police are concerned about the safety of Simcoe County construction workers after laying more than three dozen charges at one work site.

Over the past two days, officers with Nottawasaga OPP laid 40 charges at a construction zone on County Road 50, just south of Loretto. Fifteen of those charges were laid on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, a driver was spotted travelling at 90 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. The driver was fined $578 and lost four demerit points.

Police report similar such incidents in Adjala-Tosorontio, Essa and New Tecumseth. Police say speeding through construction zones put workers at risk.

OPP Const. Harry Lawrenson describes the situation as ridiculous.

“We just want to make sure that everybody is aware. We've got the weekend coming up and this is a route that goes right into cottage country and our officers are going to be out here enforcing this speed zone,” says Lawrenson.

Motorists are reminded to be alert when driving through construction zones and to keep an eye out for workers and construction crews.
