Police were busy on the long weekend patrolling Lake Simcoe and keeping a close eye on boaters.

As part of Operation Dry Water, officers with South Simcoe Police and York Regional Police stopped 67 vessels.

Police say no arrests were made for drinking and boating offences. However, six Liquor Licence Act tickets were handed out, as well as three other boating related charges.

"People seem to be getting the message", said South Simcoe Police Constable Rich Williamson. "We know that alcohol plays a factor in 40% of boating incidents. We're pleased to see that the boaters of Lake Simcoe are being responsible."

Operation Dry Water is designed to alert the public to the dangers of Impaired Boating and is held in conjunction with the Canadian Safe Boating Council every summer to discourage dangerous behaviour on the water, including drinking alcohol while piloting a vessel."

Police are also reminding all boaters to make sure they have all the necessary safety equipment onboard before setting sail.
