The past year has be trying for Peter Dockerty and his family.

After losing their feed mill to fire, they managed to rebuild and transform their business in less than a year.

"I still tear up when i share what's happening, but overall we're blessed,” he says.

Fire destroyed the historic Alliston feed mill on Aug. 19, 2016. Dockerty had owned the mill for 21 years and lost everything.

He immediately started to rebuild, but keeping the feed business  for farmers wasn't viable.

"The rebuilding  was $9 million for the mill. There was not enough business in the area," he says.

After relocating, he  sold the commercial feed business and now  sells local food products.

"The local food industry provides a lot of jobs. We're providing an avenue for these producers who are trying to start their business."

The Mill Market officially opened in April.

Dockerty proudly shares some of its  history with customers. Throughout the store you'll find repurposed items salvaged from the fire.
