AURORA, Ont. -- Police say they've received five reports Monday of animals left in cars north of Toronto during a heat alert.

York Regional police Insp. Lou Malbeuf says all five incidents took place in parking lots between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Two of the calls came from Vaughan, one from Keswick, one from Markham and one from Richmond Hill, according to Malbeuf.

He says a pet owner was charged in one of the incidents.

Environment Canada issued a heat alert Monday for parts of southern Ontario, including the greater Toronto area where the calls occurred.

Police say they want pet owners to leave their animals at home to avoid them being left in hot vehicles.
