A Newmarket man made his second court appearance on Wednesday to face second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of his two-year-old son.

Police say they were called to a residence in Newmarket on January 22nd, where they found the boy who was not breathing

He was brought to hospital where he later died.

Nayomi Little said she saw Wint right after his son died.

“He cried in my arms and he tried to explain,” she said. “He was very shaken up by it obviously.”

Police confirmed the cause of death on Friday but have yet to release that information.
Wint was arrested on Saturday.

The courtroom was packed with people for his appearance on Wednesday.

“He's not able to grieve because he's incarcerated at the moment,” said longtime friend Jason Vilneff. “To have people there to support him is probably the best thing that could happen to him right now.”

Defence lawyer Steven Skurka said he expects to be retained as Wint’s lawyer but that hasn’t happened yet.

“My client is holding up well. He's in a very solemn serious mood. He understands the gravity of the charge he's facing.”

CTV News learned that Wint was charged with assault with a weapon in Midland in 2013.

He was sentenced to 16 days in jail and three years of probation for that charge.

He has also had other charges before the courts including breach of probation.

He will remain in custody until his next court appearance in Newmarket on February 18th.
