Farmers in Ontario are getting a new tax break from the government when they donate their product to food banks.  Farmers will be eligible for a rebate of up to 25% of the market value of vegetables or meat that they donate.

Peter Sundborg, the Director of the Barrie Food Bank, says “It's a great opportunity for the farmers to get some money back from the produce that they donate, and a great opportunity for them to give to the community.”

Farmer Doug McBride says the new tax break might push hesitant farmers to say ‘Okay, we will make a donation to the charities.’

Pauline Chappell from Chappell Farms says farmers can feel good about donating.

“It feels good to know that you’re helping families meet their nutritional needs,” she said.

According to provincial statistics, one third of the 375,000 food bank clients served each month are kids.

The Barrie Food Bank hopes the new tax credit will allow them to offer fresh chicken, beef, and vegetables on a regular basis.
