As demolition crews tear apart an old Barrie motel that was damaged by fire, neighbours are concerned the rest of the property will be targeted.

Three of the five fire damaged buildings along the Blake Street property have now been demolished. While the investigation continues by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Barrie police, neighbours are concerned about what's going to happen with the rest of the property going forward.

“I wouldn't be surprised if someone came to burn this down. It’s constantly being vandalized and spray painted,” George Trottier says.

The motel was the target of two suspicious fires earlier this month.

The property owner refused to comment on plans for the future of the site.

Ward one councillor Bonnie Ainsworth says owners of abandoned buildings should be legally responsible to tear them down after a period of inactivity.

“About two years ago, I did bring an amendment to the bylaw in front of council asking for a time period; a set period that buildings such as those need to be demolished in the city and they just can't stay there forever.”

That idea was defeated by council and many in the neighbourhood say it's now time for a second look.

“It is like a time bomb. You never know when the next thing will happen. It’s disturbing,” says Zsa Zsa Zeiny.

The planning department at city hall say they have not received any more requests for demolition permits. For the time being, the buildings on site remain standing.
