People who are homeless in Barrie are getting a helping hand this weekend thanks to the generosity of three young students.

Packing 50 lunches on Saturday morning, these are meals Evan Hutt, 9, and his friends are set to deliver to people in need along the streets of downtown Barrie.

"Well, it helps other people and it feels good to do it," Hutt says.

It's a feeling these young boys seem to understand, and a lesson they want to share.

"I think it would really help the homeless, which is why people should do it,” says Christian Vacca. “They should really care about these people, they're the exact same as us. It's not like one person is more important than another one."

Hutt has been doing this for three years. He came up with the idea at the age six, when he got a loot bag at a birthday party and wanted to share the experience with everyone.

It has grown from 25 to 50 lunches, and now includes socks, mittens and Tim Hortons gift cards; purchased with donations from family and friends.

"We have a lot of love, so I find that to give love is free, and what we get back is priceless,” says Hutt’s mother, Nelia Hutt. “We get such nice reactions from people and I think he can appreciate that as well and he's also more grateful."

Different friends join every year, sharing in an experience everyone appreciates.

"They get to meet the people they're helping, so it makes it really close to home for them, and it's important I think that's great work," says Bev, who received one of the bags on Saturday.

The last stop on Hutt’s tour was at The Salvation Army, where he donated any leftover socks and mittens he had.

Hutt wants to expand the project to include the summer next year.
