A Newmarket woman has died in hospital after a fire in her apartment yesterday morning.

She was 73.

York Regional Police say nobody else was injured in the fire and officers aren't treating the fire as suspicious. The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is still investigating.

The fire broke out in the third-storey unit at about 8:30 a.m. Monday.

“The fire crews that first entered the premise found her in the hallway by her walker and rescued her from that situation,” says Central York Fire Chief Ian Laing.

Superintendent of paramedic operations Jevon Towns says the woman then had to be revived using CPR.

“When she was first brought out of the building she was in cardiac arrest. She was resuscitated using medications and CPR by the paramedics and she did have a heart rate when she left the scene,” says Towns.

The woman was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with serious injuries, where she later died.

Fire crews say it appears the fire started in the main room of the unit, in an arm chair. Neighbours say the woman was a heavy smoker and has been dealing with health issues for years.

And they say it’s not the first fire in the apartment with her.

Everyone inside the building was asked to leave for several hours.
