Apple picking has become a popular tradition at a public orchard in Huntsville and it’s thanks to a group of volunteers who wanted to restore an old treasure.

The 3rd annual Apple Picking Festival is underway at Orchard Park in Huntsville.

After three years, the festival continues to grow and provides a fun way for families to get together and pick apples.

The land has been transformed since the town bought the property which is connected with Hunter’s Bay Trail.

The town is says it’s a lesser known park so events like the apple festive are aware these trees are there and the fruit doesn’t go to waste.

“It’s a town park so anyone can come anytime and pick these apples,” says Rebecca Francis with the Town of Huntsville.

Francis say volunteers have put in a lot of work to sustain the trees so that fruit is always available for residents during apple season.

“We’re trying to get people to use the local food source that we have and so we have this is publicly available and we’ve made some efforts to improve it as well with the bushes that we’ve planted here,” adds Francis.
