It's been a long 12 months for music fans, but they were pumped when the gates opened at Burl's Creek to kick off the WayHome Music and Arts Festival.

Bands hit the stage for the first day of the three day festival on Friday, as more than 30,000 people arrived at the Oro-Medonte event grounds.

"Last night we had 15,000 people on the grounds, and this morning by 12, we had 20,000. So we're expecting we're probably going to have 35,000 in the grounds this evening for our headliner LCD Soundsystem in the main arena," says Laura Kennedy, senior director of PR at Republic Live.

Staff have taken extra steps to make sure everyone can enjoy the music safely this weekend, as temperature hit 40 C with the humidex.

"We have a number of free water stations located throughout the main entertainment space, and the campgrounds. So were encouraging everyone to stay hydrated.”

Paramedics are also on scene if anyone needs assistance. Along with lots of shaded areas within views of the stage, there are two air conditioned buildings.

Bands will perform for three full days and includes Arcade Fire and The Killers.
