Snowmobile sales in the region have gone up as the temperature has dropped.

More people are heading to the Simcoe County trails to enjoy the ideal conditions.

“We're seeing a lot of new faces, new riders and some of the old ones are coming back again,” said Sno Voyageurs Snowmobile Club President Roy Maddox. “Last year there was a 21% increase that we believe was brought on by changes we've made. This year, we've seen another 7% on top of that. At this stage of the game, there are still a lot of permits out there that clubs have sold that haven't been registered into the system yet.”

That 7% jump means 107,000 permits were sold in total this year.

St. Onge Recreation in Barrie has even had trouble keeping up with the demand for snowmobiles.

“I've seen an increase this year. Last year we sold out, and we sold out again this year. We're already taking orders now for next year right now,” said sales rep Sean Ward. “With no sleds we're doing our switchover right now for spring and summer. We've got the sea doo's coming in to the shop and the motorcycles too. People walk in the store and they're seeing summer.”

Normally the season lasts until the middle of March, but many say this year they’re hoping to be on the trails until April.
