The Simcoe County District School Board is considering closing Byng Public School in Stayner.

The school board heard delegations on Tuesday night as part of the accommodation review process on the issue.

The preferred option is to close Byng Public School and send students to Clearview Meadows Elementary School. Clearview Meadows would then become a school for students from kindergarten to grade six.

The plan would also Stayner Collegiate Institute become a school for students from grades 7 to 12.

Staff have cited declining enrollments and the high maintenance costs for Byng Public School as some of the reasons for the closure.

If approved, the school board believes the transition could be in place by September 2018.

A final decision will made at a special meeting on Thursday June 9.
